What was new in Wenlin 2.2

The new "Pinyin transcription" command is available by choosing "Make transformed copy" from the Edit menu. It enables you to take a text written in Chinese characters and produce a version of it written in pinyin. This feature is primarily intended for use by teachers and advanced students. Since a single character can have multiple pronunciations depending on its meaning or usage in a particular context, only a human being who understands the meaning can determine the correct pinyin transcription for some characters. Wenlin's procedure is therefore only semi-automatic: it asks you to decide ambiguous cases using a special "Fix:" notation. As an intermediate step, for higher accuracy, you can "segment" the character text to determine where the word boundaries are between characters.

On either Macintosh or MS-Windows, you can insert a button for activating a QuickTime movie in a Wenlin document, using a hypertext link as described in section 8.7.2 on page 144 of the User's Guide. (You must have QuickTime from Apple installed on your computer.)

Version 2.2 fixes a few bugs, including one that made handwriting recognition less effective after a failed attempt or after the Clear button was pressed; and a problem where, on a Macintosh only, a nul byte was added to the end of text pasted from Wenlin into another application.

Also, if you don't already have version 2.1, please see What Was New in Wenlin 2.1.

Other than the improvements just mentioned, the documentation for 2.2 remains the same as for 2.0.
